FIFA Rankings

I’m not a big fan of the FIFA rankings. I think it’s silly to go as far back as they do when tabulating results for teams for a current ranking.

But there’ll be a few England fans right clicking ‘save as’ for this month’s….

When was the last time you saw England ranked above Brazil? And I’m not sure I can remember seeing Italy and Argentina as low as they are. The other thing that stands out is that France is now the 1oth ranked European team according to this.

Well, they really are a statistician’s dream. Notice that Antigua and Barbuda is 83, five places up on Finland. If they played, I don’t think anyone would take ten-to-one that A&B would beat Finland. Anyone know who might be the Jari Litmanen of Antigua and Barbuda? Or even the Teemu Tainio of A&B?

What are the ELO rankings like right now?

Haha, England>Brazil…….always nice for a good laugh in this rainy weather!

It’s my understanding ELO is much more accurate. I don’t bother to look up WHY people say that though….anyway….

    FIFA – Canada @ 72
    ELO – Canada @ 60

So yep, ELO must be more accurate! haha. And for Ron,

    FIFA – Finland @ 88
    ELO – Finland @ 61

    Who is Canada’s Tainio!? 🙂 Finland>Canada IMO though….be a good match though.

    Colin, I’ve gained 2 on ya! 🙂

What is sobering is Australia, didn’t they have a little reform of their football organization a few years ago?

Rankings mean very little when in between major tournaments and Nat teams are playing friendlies. The recent 1-0 win by England over Spain a classic example. Are players concerned about their fitness, and getting back to their club teams in one piece for league and Champions league play, or is the friendly the pinnacle?
Rankings probably make sense if they were done in the context of pools, i.e. top 10, 10-20, etc. The biggest value of the rankings is probably for the bookies or the betting systems. But that’s a whole other issue.
