FIFA Executive vote for the full ‘double dip’

Russia and Qatar? Has it really got to this level of corruption at FIFA? As soon as Qatar was announced you could almost hear the Swiss bankers groan, “Well, there goes my lunch break.”

Russia, you can live with. It can be justified and you’d think that FIFA would settle for that, count their cash, and head off to trough content with the day’s take. But Qatar? With a population less than Metro Vancouver, summer temperatures in the high 40’s, a penchant for Medieval justice and ZERO history of any sort of success in the game EVER? It reeks.

But no country floats on cash like Qatar. And that money comes directly from an unelected Emirate that doesn’t need to worry about someone auditing their books.

Unbelievable. Some great posts on Twitter about the announcements but this pic sums it up for me. It’s the Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko grabbing the World Cup from Blatter.

  1. Mike says:

how do you say “incroyable” in Arabic?

  2. Gregor says:

    I believe it’s pronounced “lashings”…

  3. Bruce says:

After hearing about the Qatar win, Steve Nash tweeted “The bribe must have been large to outbid Budweiser’s sponsorship”.

  4. Larry says:

The Qatar decision borders on the bizarre. Climate controlled stadiums that can be modularly built and de-constructed to be moved elsewhere. Who dreams this stuff up? Meanwhile, countries with mostly existing infrastructure do not win.
I guess in 2022 there will be no economic meltdown like 2008-10. So much for the application of sensible economics. Besides, it will be interesting to see how many tourists actually go to Qatar.
